Get Yourself a Linux Virtual Dedicated Server
25 November 2008 @ 23:00 GMT
by Paul

Having your own server with root access which is permanently connected to the remote Internet is cheap. Should every self respecting Linux user have one?

I think so. The key is to have a virtual private server with ssh access. That way you can configure it from the command line as you would your desktop or laptop.

With a virtual private server you can:

  • Run your own mail transfer agent so you aren't restricted by your ISP's rules
  • Have a remote backup for your essential files
  • Have a place to share files
  • Run a remote IMAP server to access your mail from anywhere or any device with IMAP support
  • Run a web server configured exactly as you want it

Another advantage is that you learn a lot about configuring a Linux system and Linux servers.

Now I have my own remote virtual dedicated server, I wonder how I ever did without one.
