Assigning network interfaces

How does the kernel decide if an interface should be called, eth0, eth1 or eth2 etc?

They are assigned in the order they are detected.

However, by default, the kernel only probes for one ethernet device.

The 'ether=' kernel argument can be used to configure devices that are compiled into the kernel.
